Climbing In Ghana

Rock climbing has seen steady growth in Ghana over the past decade. While many of the early climbers were primarily of foreign origin, they have played a significant role in developing the sport. Today, local Ghanaian climbers are taking the lead, driving its rising popularity and helping to shape the future of the climbing community.

If you're planning a trip to Ghana and need a quick guide to get you prepared for the adventure, here's what you need to know.

Climbing Spots

Located just 1.5 hours from Accra, Krobo Mountains is a prime climbing destination with multiple bolted routes, ranging from 5a to 7a/b difficulty levels

Krobo Mountains: The climbing here is mostly organized through the Rockstars Whatsapp group, a community of climbers based in Ghana. Experienced climbers can head to Krobo on their own, but it's recommended to connect with local climbers for guidance and safety. The group is known for being supportive and welcoming to newcomers.

Asubone: Asubone, located about 4.5 hours from Accra, is home to the West Africa Climbing Festival and offers a more remote climbing experience compared to Krobo. Due to its distance, a trip to Asubone is better suited for camping, making it a perfect multi-day adventure. This small town sitting at bank of the Volta Lake is trove of boulder and a very welcoming community.

Gyms: Ghana currently lacks commercial outdoor or indoor climbing gyms. However, local climbers in Accra occasionally build private home gyms, accessible strictly by invitation. These setups help maintain the climbing community and provide training opportunities in a country where formal facilities are scarce.

Gears

Climbing gear options in Ghana are limited. Decathlon offers some gear on their website, but stock is often low and selections are limited.

However, they can ship purchases upon request. For more specialized equipment, many climbers either import gear themselves or rely on recommendations from local climbing groups like the Rockstars Whatsapp group. While the gear selection is currently small, the growing climbing community in Ghana hopes for better access to equipment in the future.

The Community

The rock climbing community in Ghana, despite being around for over a decade, is still largely made up of foreigners on international duties, with a handful of Ghanaian climbers.

This mix brings diverse levels of expertise and creates excellent opportunities for knowledge sharing. Recognizing the need for more local involvement, the community has started making active efforts to encourage and grow Ghanaian participation in climbing, aiming to build a more inclusive and sustainable local climbing culture.

Training & Tips

Climbing in Ghana offers a blend of technical challenges and stunning natural landscapes, from granite cliffs to forested boulders

As the sport grows locally, it’s essential for climbers of all levels to prepare effectively. Be prepared for the unique conditions in Ghana—dealing with heat, humidity, and the specific rock types you'll encounter. If you visit Krobo, you may encounter some less domestic groups of baboons. They have never attacked any climber or hiker, these are the shy ones and mostly trying to get away from you. Get yourself a hang-board or describe to local carpenters to build one for you.
